Recipe Management

Fully ISA-88 Compliant Control for Process Precision ISA-88 recipe management with automated setpoint download to PLCs, real-time deviation monitoring and 21 CFR Part 11 e-signatures.

Built on Inductive Automation IgnitionISA-88, 21 CFR Part 11

The challenge

Manual recipe management exposes manufacturers to costly errors, inconsistent product quality and compliance risk. Operators re-key setpoints into PLCs, uncontrolled recipe versions circulate on paper or spreadsheets, and there is no real-time view of whether equipment is running at target, driving batch failures, product holds and regulatory findings.

Overview

The LOGICAL SYSTEMS Recipe Management (RM) application provides a single, controlled system for the entire recipe lifecycle, from product definition, trials and approval through to execution. Built on the Inductive Automation Ignition platform, it follows the ISA-88 (S88) procedural model, structuring recipes as procedures, operations and phases with parameters bound directly to OPC tags. Setpoints download automatically via manual, auto-on-previous-complete or equipment-request triggers, with verification readback confirming values are received correctly.

Real-time setpoint monitoring compares actual process values against targets across configurable tolerance bands, raising alarms before quality is compromised. Golden Batch comparison supports batch-to-batch consistency, NPD trial workflows support new product development, and material substitution, potency-based scaling and tail-end management optimise quality and yield. With 21 CFR Part 11 electronic signatures, full audit trails and version-controlled approvals, RM scales from single production lines to multi-site operations.

Capabilities

What RM does

Full-Loop Quality Execution

  • Batch records flow to LSA QMS for release and CoA generation
  • Recipe parameters feed LSA SPC control charts; approvals generate LSA TMS tasks
  • Active batch tracking with product, recipe and equipment assignment visibility
  • Live deviation alerts showing severity, actual vs target and percentage deviation
  • Equipment availability with maintenance tracking and capacity utilisation
  • Approval pipeline promoting recipes through Draft, Pending, Approved and Active states

ISA-88 Recipe Model

  • Master Recipes define how to make a product, independent of equipment
  • Control Recipes: batch-specific instances with potency-adjusted values and scaled quantities
  • Equipment Recipes bind to equipment with resolved OPC tag addresses
  • Recipes structured as Procedure → Operation → Phase → Parameters
  • Phases configured with type, download trigger, BOM materials, tolerances and completion criteria
  • Controlled lifecycle from Draft to Obsolete with e-signatures at each transition

Comprehensive Governance

  • Products defined with material properties, BOM structures and barcode/SKU assignments
  • Each product links to one or more recipes, each with multiple versioned procedures
  • Target values written directly to PLCs with configurable verification readback
  • Trigger-based downloads start when OPC tag conditions are met, e.g. equipment handshakes
  • Changeover detection flags product transitions for cleaning and parameter revalidation

Enterprise to Shop-Floor Connectivity

  • ERP supplies production orders and scheduling data, and receives batch completion records
  • Direct PLC and SCADA integration through OPC UA and OPC DA
  • Bidirectional communication with process equipment, including verification readback

Key Features

  • Golden Batch comparison: Single Reference, Statistical or Envelope
  • NPD trial workflow with stage-gated progression from Concept through Validation
  • Material substitution with automatic potency/concentration rebalancing
  • Process Segment configuration with production line flow visualisation
  • Equipment class and instance management with OPC tag path templates
  • 21 CFR Part 11 electronic signatures with configurable signature requirements

Benefits

Why manufacturers choose RM

Consistency across sites

A standardised recipe structure ensures consistency across products, lines and sites.

No manual entry errors

Eliminates manual data entry errors and confirms PLC values match recipe targets.

Flexible execution

Execution models range from fully manual to fully automated equipment handshake.

Early deviation detection

Deviations are detected and alarmed immediately, before quality is compromised.

Structured product development

A trial-to-production promotion path brings structure to new product development.

Regulatory compliance

Regulatory compliance for pharmaceutical, food and other regulated manufacturing.

Recipe Management eliminated manual setpoint entry and gave us full traceability for every parameter.
